This year Simon is in 4th grade and Grace is in 1st grade and I find myself asking them every day after school, \u201cSo how was school today?\u201d.<\/p>\n

And everyday I get an answer like \u201cfine\u201d or \u201cgood\u201d which doesn\u2019t tell me a whole lot.<\/p>\n

AND I WANT TO KNOW A WHOLE LOT!!!!<\/p>\n

Or at get at least a full sentence.\u00a0 So the other night I sat down and made a list of more engaging questions to ask about school.\u00a0 They aren\u2019t perfect\u2026but I do get at least complete sentences\u2026and some have lead to interesting conversations\u2026and hilarious answers\u2026and\u00a0a few\u00a0insights into how my kids think and feel about their time at school.<\/p>\n

#1.\u00a0 What was the best thing that happened at school today?\u00a0 (What was the worst thing that happened at school today?)<\/p>\n

#2.\u00a0 Tell me something that made you laugh today.<\/p>\n

#3.\u00a0 If you could choose who would you like to sit by in class?\u00a0 (Who would you NOT want to sit by in class?\u00a0 Why?)<\/p>\n

#4.\u00a0 Where is the coolest place at the school?<\/p>\n

#5.\u00a0 Tell me a weird word that you heard today.\u00a0 (Or something weird that someone said.)<\/p>\n

#6.\u00a0 If I called your teacher tonight what would she tell me about you?<\/p>\n

#7.\u00a0 How did you help somebody today?<\/p>\n

#8.\u00a0 How did somebody help you today?<\/p>\n

#9.\u00a0 Tell me one thing that you learned today.<\/p>\n

#10.\u00a0 When were you the happiest today?<\/p>\n

#11.\u00a0 When were you bored today?<\/p>\n

#12.\u00a0 If an alien spaceship came to your class and beamed up someone who would you want them to take?<\/p>\n

#13.\u00a0 Who would you like to play with at recess that you\u2019ve never played with before?<\/p>\n

#14.\u00a0 Tell me something good that happened today.<\/p>\n

#15.\u00a0 What word did your teacher say most today?<\/p>\n

#16.\u00a0 What do you think you should do\/learn more of at school?<\/p>\n

#17.\u00a0 What do you think you should do\/learn less of at school?<\/p>\n

#18.\u00a0 Who in your class do you think you could be nicer to?<\/p>\n

#19.\u00a0 Where do you play the most at recess?<\/p>\n

#20.\u00a0 Who is the funniest person in your class?\u00a0 Why is he\/she so funny?<\/p>\n

#21.\u00a0 What was your favorite part of lunch?<\/p>\n

#22.\u00a0 If you got to be the teacher tomorrow what would you do?<\/p>\n

#23.\u00a0 Is there anyone in your class that needs a time out?<\/p>\n

#24.\u00a0 If you could switch seats with anyone in the class who would you trade with?\u00a0 Why?<\/p>\n

#25.\u00a0 Tell me\u00a0about three different times you used your pencil today at school.<\/p>\n

So far\u2026my favorite answers have come from questions #12. #15, and #21.<\/p>\n

I actually love questions like the \u201calien\u201d one (#12).\u00a0 They\u00a0give kids a non-threatening way to say who they would rather not have in their class, and open the door for you to have a discussion to ask why, potentially uncovering issues you didn\u2019t know about before.<\/p>\n

And the answers we get are sometimes really surprising. When I asked question #3, I discovered that one of my children didn\u2019t want to sit by a best friend in class anymore \u2014 not out of a desire to be mean or bully, but in the hope they\u2019d get the chance to work with other people.<\/p>\n

Sometimes we just need to figure out the right kinds of questions to ask our children\u2026.some questions may work better for some kids than others.\u00a0 That\u2019s how it is with my own children.\u00a0 But I want to know what is going on in their lives and how I can help them.\u00a0 So\u2026.I will continue to ask\u2026and ask\u2026and ask\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

And, as my kids get older I know that I am going to have to work harder and harder to stay engaged with them\u2026but I know its going to be worth the work\u2026<\/p>\n
